18 May 2026, Kanpur : On the occasion of World Hypertension Day (2026), a public awareness program on the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure was organized with the support of the Association of Physicians of India (API), Kanpur Chapter at the OPD Block Hall, Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, Kanpur.


Approximately 1,500 patients were screened for blood pressure during the event. It was observed that around 25% of patients were suffering from hypertension, many of whom were asymptomatic. Patients and their attendants were educated about the risks and management of high blood pressure.



The program was inaugurated by Dr. Sanjay Kala, Principal, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur. In his address, he emphasized the importance of regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle for controlling hypertension.


The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Richa Giri, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, who explained the harmful effects of hypertension on vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes.



According to global data shared during the program, approximately 128 crore people worldwide suffer from hypertension, while in India, around 20–25 crore people are affected, out of which only 12% have their blood pressure under control. Experts advised reducing salt intake, undergoing regular blood pressure check-ups, and consulting doctors for effective prevention.


Dr. Anita Soni, Senior Resident, Department of Medicine, elaborated on the complications associated with uncontrolled hypertension.


Following this, a seminar was organized in the Seminar Hall of the Medicine Department, GSVM Medical College.


The theme of World Hypertension Day 2026 was:

“Controlling Hypertension Together”


The program was conducted under the leadership of Principal Prof. Sanjay Kala, with coordination by Dr. S.K. Gautam (Secretary, API Kanpur) and participation from faculty members of the Medicine Department.

17 May 2026, Kanpur : The Kanpur Obstetrics and Gynecology Society (KOGS), affiliated with FOGSI, organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program today on the topic “Latest Guidelines for the Management of Iron Deficiency Anemia and Preterm Labor” at Hotel Royal Cliff, Swaroop Nagar, Kanpur.


The academic session was inaugurated with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by KOGS President Dr. Kalpana Dixit, Secretary Dr. Reshma Nigam, Chief Speaker and FOGSI Past President Dr. P.K. Shah, along with other distinguished guests present on the dais.


During the first scientific session, Dr. P.K. Shah delivered a lecture on the latest guidelines for the management of iron deficiency anemia. He highlighted that more than 50% of pregnant women in Uttar Pradesh suffer from anemia, which is a major cause of maternal mortality and low birth weight in newborns. He elaborated on the FOGSI/ICMR 2025 updates, including oral iron therapy, new single-dose IV iron therapy, and strategies for early detection and treatment under the “Anemia Mukt Bharat” initiative.


The second session was conducted by Dr. Meera Agnihotri, Dr. Kalpana Dixit, and Dr. Reshma Nigam. The speakers also noted that the day marked World Hypertension Day, emphasizing that 5–10% of maternal deaths in India are due to pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and that IV Magnesium Sulfate injections are highly effective in prevention and management.


Dr. Meera Agnihotri addressed the topic “Latest Guidelines for the Management of Preterm Labor”, stating that 35% of neonatal deaths in India are due to preterm births. She discussed evidence-based use of progesterone, tocolytics, antenatal corticosteroids, and magnesium sulfate for neuroprotection, and emphasized the importance of timely referral and NICU preparedness.


The CME witnessed participation from over 100 senior gynecologists, postgraduate students, and medical officers from Kanpur and nearby districts. This was followed by an interactive panel discussion, where participants shared practical challenges faced in managing anemia and preterm labor.


The program concluded with a vote of thanks by KOGS Secretary Dr. Reshma Nigam, who reaffirmed the society’s commitment to academic excellence and promoting public health awareness for women in the region.

Stay Alert in Extreme Heat: Preventing Heat Stroke Can Save Lives
What is Heat Stroke?

Experts explained that heat stroke is a serious medical emergency in which the body temperature rises to 40°C or above, impairing the body's ability to regulate temperature. If not treated promptly, it can be life-threatening.

Common Symptoms of Heat Stroke
High fever and extremely hot body
Headache, dizziness, and weakness
Nausea or vomiting
Reduced or absence of sweating
Red, dry, and hot skin
Confusion, unconsciousness, or seizures (in severe cases)
Who is at Higher Risk?
Elderly individuals and young children
People working outdoors (laborers, traffic police, etc.)
Patients suffering from heart, kidney, or other serious illnesses
Individuals affected by dehydration
“Negligence Can Be Fatal”

Doctors cautioned that heat stroke should not be taken lightly. Early identification and immediate medical intervention are crucial to prevent serious complications.

Effective Preventive Measures
Drink adequate fluids throughout the day, including water, ORS, lemon water, and buttermilk
Cover your head while stepping out in the sun (cap, cloth, umbrella)
Wear light, loose, and cotton clothing
Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities between 12 PM and 4 PM
Take special care of children and elderly individuals
Do not go out in the sun on an empty stomach or while dehydrated
First Aid Measures
Move the patient immediately to a cool place
Loosen clothing and cool the body (pour water or use a wet cloth)
Give ORS or water if the patient is conscious
In severe cases, take the patient to the nearest hospital immediately
“Hydration is the Best Protection”

Doctors emphasized that staying well-hydrated, keeping the body cool, and avoiding direct sun exposure are the simplest and most effective ways to prevent heat stroke.

In conclusion, IMA office bearers appealed to all citizens to remain vigilant, take care of their families, and spread awareness about heat stroke prevention to as many people as possible.

09 April 2026, Kanpur : Blood donation camp was organized by the Department of Transfusion Medicine, Medical College, Kanpur, in collaboration with Kanpur Thalassemics and GSVM Medical College, Kanpur.

On this occasion, MBBS Students participated actively. With the blessings of Dr. Sanjay Kala, Principal GSVM and examplary initiative by Dr. Yashwant K. Rao, Prof. Dept. Of Pediatrics to motivate these MBBS students. Special mention for Dr. Lubna Khan (Nodal officier , Transfussion medicine), she also donated blood to boost the morale of all blood donors.
The students voluntarily donated blood for children suffering from thalassemia. The camp witnessed great enthusiasm among the donors. A total of 108 units of blood were collected during the camp.

Dr. Namrata Nigam (Assistant Professor) from the Department of Transfusion Medicine was present to assist & to ensure the safety of all blood donors.

The camp was successfully conducted with the support of Mr. B. Bhattacharya (President, Kanpur Thalassemics), Mr. Prem Narayan Gupta, Mr. Gyan Singh (Technical Supervisor), and the Blood Bank team.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Kanpur Branch, organized the “IMA Organ Donation Awareness Car Rally 2026 – Docs on Wheels” on Sunday, 22 February 2026, with great enthusiasm and participation. The primary objective of the rally was to spread awareness about organ donation and to convey the message “Donate Organs, Save Life” to the public.

The rally was flagged off from Delhi Public School, Mainawati Marg, Bithoor Road, Kanpur by Hon’ble Member of Parliament Mr. Ramesh Awasthi, along with distinguished guests Dr. Vipin Tanda, Additional Commissioner of Police, Kanpur Nagar, and Mr. Alok Mishra, Managing Director, Delhi Public School Kanpur.

The chief guest of the program was Mrs. Neelima Katiyar, MLA, Kalyanpur, and the distinguished guests were Dr. Hari Datt Nemi, Chief Medical Officer, Kanpur Nagar, and Dr. Ramit Rastogi, Additional CMO, Kanpur Nagar.
