Awareness Program Organized on World Hypertension Day 2026 in Kanpur

18 May 2026, Kanpur : On the occasion of World Hypertension Day (2026), a public awareness program on the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure was organized with the support of the Association of Physicians of India (API), Kanpur Chapter at the OPD Block Hall, Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, Kanpur.


Approximately 1,500 patients were screened for blood pressure during the event. It was observed that around 25% of patients were suffering from hypertension, many of whom were asymptomatic. Patients and their attendants were educated about the risks and management of high blood pressure.



The program was inaugurated by Dr. Sanjay Kala, Principal, GSVM Medical College, Kanpur. In his address, he emphasized the importance of regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle for controlling hypertension.


The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Richa Giri, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, who explained the harmful effects of hypertension on vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes.



According to global data shared during the program, approximately 128 crore people worldwide suffer from hypertension, while in India, around 20–25 crore people are affected, out of which only 12% have their blood pressure under control. Experts advised reducing salt intake, undergoing regular blood pressure check-ups, and consulting doctors for effective prevention.


Dr. Anita Soni, Senior Resident, Department of Medicine, elaborated on the complications associated with uncontrolled hypertension.


Following this, a seminar was organized in the Seminar Hall of the Medicine Department, GSVM Medical College.


The theme of World Hypertension Day 2026 was:

“Controlling Hypertension Together”


The program was conducted under the leadership of Principal Prof. Sanjay Kala, with coordination by Dr. S.K. Gautam (Secretary, API Kanpur) and participation from faculty members of the Medicine Department.

  2. Dr. Yuvraj Gulati (Nephrology Department) – Information on hypertension and kidney-related diseases
  3. Dr. Abhishek Naresh (Cardiology Department, Heart Institute) – Effects of hypertension on the heart
  4. Dr. Garima Gupta (Obstetrics & Gynecology) – Hypertension during pregnancy
  5. Dr. Vineet Kumar (Medicine Department) – Impact of hypertension in elderly patients

The program was attended by several senior doctors including Dr. Brajesh Kumar, Dr. S.K. Gautam, Dr. Reena Singh, Dr. G.N.S. Kushwaha, Dr. Sameer Tripathi, Dr. Ajit Kumar Nigam, Dr. Satyam Kumar Singh, and Dr. Vineet Kumar.
Additionally, Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Richa Giri, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Arvind Verma, and Dr. Anita Gautam (CMS, Ursala Hospital, Kanpur) were also present. Faculty members from various departments, along with paramedical and undergraduate students, actively participated in the event.
