IMA Kanpur Celebrates 114th Foundation Day with Grand Ceremony
28, May 2026, Kanpur : The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Kanpur Branch, celebrated its 114th Foundation Day on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Jitendra Kumar Lohia Auditorium, IMA Building, Parade, Kanpur. During the समारोह, former presidents, former secretaries, and new members of the IMA Kanpur Branch were honored for their contributions and association with the organization.
IMA Kanpur President Dr. Anurag Mehrotra stated that the IMA Kanpur Branch is proudly celebrating its 114th Foundation Day on May 28. He highlighted the glorious history of the institution and informed that the branch was established on May 28, 1912, by 20 dedicated doctors. The Kanpur Branch is one of the oldest branches in Uttar Pradesh and among the leading branches in the country.
He further shared that the construction of the IMA Kanpur Building took place between 1928 and 1931, with remarkable contributions from British administrative officers of that era and eminent personalities of Kanpur including Shri Vikramajit Singh, Lala Kamlapat Singhania, Dr. Bhattacharya, Shri M.S.D. Narona, and Dr. M.X.D. Narona. Over the years, several renovation and expansion works were undertaken with significant support from senior doctors and social workers.
Dr. Mehrotra stated that the organization has continuously worked for medical services, social responsibility, and the welfare of doctors. Today, IMA Kanpur has established itself as one of the most active and prominent branches in Uttar Pradesh. He added that with the completion of 114 years and the growing membership strength, which has now reached approximately 2,450 members, along with increasing social responsibilities, the need for a new “Temple of Service” was strongly felt. Several former presidents and executive members have worked tirelessly in this direction over the past few years, resulting in the creation of the present modern and magnificent building.
He also pointed out that IMA Kanpur is the only branch in the country that was established several years before the formation of the IMA Headquarters, making it the first organized branch in India. The foundation of the branch was laid on May 28, 1912, under the name “Kanpur Medical Association,” while the IMA Headquarters was established 17 years later in 1928. He said that every year, May 28 is celebrated as Foundation Day in remembrance of the founder members and their invaluable contributions.
Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Former President of IMA Uttar Pradesh, shed light on the rich and distinguished history of the IMA Kanpur Branch.
The Chief Guest of the program, Dr. Rajeev Goyal, President, IMA Uttar Pradesh State, praised the Kanpur Branch for always remaining at the forefront of medical and social activities. He remarked that the Kanpur Branch is among the most active branches in the state and continues to work tirelessly for the welfare of both doctors and society.
Distinguished guests including Ms. Soumya Pandey, IAS, Additional Labour Commissioner, Kanpur Nagar; Dr. Vipin Tada, IPS, Additional Police Commissioner (Law & Order), Kanpur; and Shri Anand Kumar Ojha, ACP Collectorganj, also appreciated the remarkable work of IMA Kanpur and extended their congratulations on the Foundation Day.
IMA Kanpur Secretary Prof. Dr. Shalini Mohan stated that the Foundation Day is an occasion to remember the glorious history of the institution and acknowledge the contributions of its founder members and former office bearers. She emphasized that former presidents and secretaries played a vital role in taking the organization to new heights, while the new members represent the future strength of the association.
She further added that this year’s Foundation Day celebration holds special historical significance as the branch completes 114 glorious years. During the ceremony, former presidents, former secretaries, and newly inducted members of the IMA Kanpur Branch were felicitated.
Dr. Mohan also mentioned that IMA Kanpur continuously works for doctors’ welfare, medical education, social service, and public health awareness. The branch regularly organizes health awareness campaigns, medical camps, CME programs, and various social activities.
On this occasion, all members collectively pledged to carry forward the glorious legacy of the institution and continue serving society and the medical fraternity with dedication.
The event witnessed the gracious presence of senior doctors, office bearers, and members of IMA Kanpur. Members also entertained the audience with karaoke musical performances.
The program was jointly conducted by Dr. Raj Tilak and Dr. Renu Singh Gehlot. New members were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Shalini Mohan, Secretary, IMA Kanpur, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Vishal Singh, Finance Secretary, IMA Kanpur.
